Red Horse Candles was started by Courtlyn Jarrell, an avid candle lover and named after her beloved big "red" horse Macbeth, who had passed away around the time she was starting this candle company. She grew up with Macbeth since she was 12 years old and had him for over 20 years. He was a beautiful light chestnut "ginger or red" colored horse, so the name Red Horse Candles was born.
Courtlyn created this company due to being unable to find scented candles she and her family could enjoy with their health conditions, which includes severe migraines and COPD.
Before Courtlyn started making her own candles, she did extensive research to find scented candles she and her family could enjoy and found that there are not many candle companies that focus on persons with sensitivities. Some of Courtlyn's migraines can be triggered by strong scents. So, finding candles that she could enjoy was very difficult and the few candles she had found turned out to have damaging effects for her father's health who has severe COPD.
So, she fully dived into researching every aspect of candle making and finding the right kind of ingredients that would not be damaging to anyone's health and all could enjoy the aroma and ambiance of burning a scented candle. In that research she found that even unscented or all natural candles can release harmful chemicals, toxins, perfumes, or heavy soot into the air. Usually, they are not in enough concentration to be harmful, but persons with lung conditions can be severely affected.

So, she did extensive research looking into the creation of candles, including talking with her father's pulmonologist about what is safe for him and what is not. After researching ingredients, trial and error, she found using certain ingredients together, she could make a candle safe for her and her family. During that time, she found that not only would her candles be great for persons with scent sensitivities or lung conditions they are also perfectly safe to have around your pets, including birds who have delicate lungs.
